Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our wonderful school is in a high poverty area in Chicago. My junior high students are polite, well mannered, hard-working students who come from good homes. Many of my students are diverse learners; many come from another country or are first-generation Americans. They all face challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite their obstacles, my students come into my classroom eager to learn and do their best every day. These students are extremely diverse in terms of academic ability. This diversity is great, but as a teacher, it can be a challenge to reach all my students when they are at different levels academically. My goal is to make sure that all students, regardless of where they are academically, have all the tools they need to be successful and become lifelong learners. As the computer teacher at a Title I school, I like to provide my students with hands-on learning. Many of my students do not have opportunities with technology or the experiences that other children have. By giving them the materials needed to explore and create, they are getting the equity they deserve.
My Project
These materials will make a huge difference in my students lives by teaching them so much more than just coding. My technology classes include diverse learners and general education students. Usually, all of my students are on their individual chrome book or iPad working independently. By having my general education students partner up with my moderately cognitive delayed students to work on coding with robots they will not only learn coding but they will also learn kindness, empathy, and teamwork.
My students have never had any experience with coding or robotics.
My students gain confidence when they have the chance to be active learners and take ownership over their learning goals. Working together to identify and solve problems as a community of learners is what brings out the best in my students. By bringing Sphero MInis in to our classroom my students will be able to set up an obstacle course and see if they can code the balls to navigate through it using just their faces. They can also code these Sphero Minis to knock down bowling pins. They will use the Samsung tablet to program the robotic balls. We need the protective cover for the Samsung tablet in case they drop it while navigating their robotics. I want to encourage students to participate in their learning, encourage teamwork, and allow students to contribute based on their individual strengths. Coding and robotics can be difficult to learn, for all students but especially for diverse learners with no background in these areas, but having fun with engaging, hands-on lessons can be a game changer for this diverse population and their peers.
