My Students

I teach in a rural district with 217 students that are in grades K-12. My students are amazing, uplifting, and filled with potential. Most of them come from homes that exist below the poverty level.

Some of my students are faced with daily challenges that interfere with learning, like no running water and no food at home.

I would like to enable these amazing children to follow their dreams and do great things in life. I know they are capable, they just need to believe in themselves!

My Project

My students live in a rural community and most of their experiences are very limited. I want to expose them to hands-on labs in Science to help them increase their experiences and become more interested in how the world works. Hands-on labs and experiments help them to understand how the world works and makes them get more out of their experience in the classroom. Most of the supplies we currently have been handed down from the High School and are mismatched and worn out.

We are going to be doing a lab that revolves around magnetic fields and exploring the strength of Magnetic Forces and Energy.

The Unit question we will be investigating is: Why do magnets move objects in different ways? To do this lab properly we need an assortment of magnets, including weak and strong magnets, bars and ring magnets, and as well as supplies to record the data that is collected. They will be gathering data about how the strength of magnetic force relates to the potential energy stored in a system. In addition to that, they will use the magnets again to explore kinetic energy in systems. For this, we will need to add pom-pom balls, wooden craft sticks, compression springs and card stock. They will use whiteboards, dry-erase markers and erasers to record questions and observations in their groups. It will be several fun days of experimentation and all three grades will have the opportunity to do them.

I firmly believe that if I can spark an interest in something they have never known or seen before, it will help them become great contributors to society. I know my students are going to do great things in life, and I want to give them the opportunity to learn through experience.
