We are a Kindergarten class that comes from a culturally diverse background but has one thing in common...we ALL can learn! I teach my students to try their best and live by the motto "I Can Do Hard Things!" A lot of our day is spent in small group learning centers which provide opportunities to differentiate and encourage independent work. We need these resources to help my students work even more independently and to teach essential standards and skills. I teach in a school with a lower socioeconomic population and many of my students come from single parent homes or have both parents working full time just to support their families. Regardless of the circumstances or restrictions surrounding the Pandemic, my students look forward to coming to school each day and their love of learning increases daily! In spite of their young age (only 5 or 6 years old,) they work hard and try their best even when the task seems difficult or they are required to wear a mask. They maintain a positive attitude and try to always make others around them feel better. They inspire me and they are the central reason I love to teach!
My Project
Receiving this donation would provide my students with meaningful hands-on experiences that will add to their academic learning in the classroom in light of COVID-19. Many of these items would allow small groups of students to work together and keep them motivated and on task while I provide direct reading instruction to a separate group of students. These interactive groups provide much needed social-emotional support and opportunities to learn from one another. The wipe off sleeves, dry erase markers and marker boards will encourage more practice with letter formation and help solidify basic writing skills. The spinners and dice will help turn math tasks into engaging learning games. The Beginning Sound Learning Center, Word Building Center, Roll & Read Short Vowel Game and Alphabet Folders will extend my students' learning in both phonemic awareness and phonics which are foundational skills in learning to read. A lot of our day is spent practicing these initial reading skills and these materials will make acquiring them more hands-on and fun!
All of these items will greatly help my students to grow and donations received for this project will be a valuable asset to our classroom!
Not only would they provide a variety of learning opportunities for students that are hands-on and exciting, it would also help differentiate my instruction even more for the wide range of learners in our classroom! This donation would help with all subjects in the Core Curriculum, would last several years and be used throughout the entire school year.
