Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Hand drums are the perfect instrumental base for instruction in elementary music because drums are present in some form in every culture. Small hand drums and large gathering drums are perfect for young children. Mallets help children improve fine motor skills and gain rhythmic accuracy
My students are highly creative and love music.
Most of them qualify as low socio-economic. Additionally most of of our students who qualify for free or reduced lunch are also learning English as their second language. Due to our high poverty and language isolation, many of my students miss out on opportunities that most of us take for granted. It is my goal to equalize their opportunities as much as I can. I believe that education in music helps them tremendously as for some of them, my music class is their first and most successful educational experience. Adding hand drums would be one more step toward ensuring that my students had an equitable opportunity for music education.
My Project
Hand drums are quick and easy to manage and are enjoyed by younger and older students equally. Using hand drums will allow us to explore multi-cultural music from all over the world. Imagine being in a group of 4th grade students who use a large gathering drum to study the music of Native Americans in Texas, or being in 2nd grade and learning about the drumming patterns of Northern Africa and the Middle East. 5th graders could use hand drums to learn a Classical Indian tala (rhythmic pattern). Hand drums and gathering drums are one of the most unifying and present instruments in all of music. By allowing my students to express themselves musically drums, I will be able to bring the rest of the world outside our classroom, city and state to them in a real and concrete way that books, Internet and video can never provide.
One of the critical elements of a music classroom are appropriate and well cared for percussion instruments.
The most basic and universal among the percussion instruments are hand drums and gathering drums. Without your support, my classroom has 2 hand drums, one of which is fragile as it has been well used and is now very worn. With your help we will have the drums we need to access the world of music in a brand new way.
