My students need 4 hand/desk bell sets (covering 13 chromatic notes each), cases to store the bells, and basic supplies to learn how to play hand/desk bells.
Imagine the feeling of achievement when a student plays his/her own individual part of a song and hears it come together with other parts that combine for a beautiful musical piece. This is what students can experience if given a chance to play hand/desk bells as part of a group.
My students come from all parts of the city to attend our school, and they represent our diverse area of California.
Despite their socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic differences, my students are unified by music in a way that is truly unique. They love participating in music class and could always benefit from further musical opportunities that foster collaboration and teamwork.
My Project
With a class set of hand/desk bells, each student could be responsible for at least one note to play along with songs we learn. If each student would have a note/bell to play, it would keep all students engaged in learning and also teach them the importance of working together.
Participation in a hand bell group is a great way for students to see how each student's part plays an essential role in the overall musical presentation. Even with very little musical training, children can hear how the melody and/or harmony depends on each one ringing his or her bell exactly in time with the music while following the director. This teaches cooperation, perseverance, patience, and responsibility.
Besides in-class opportunities with these hand bells, my students can enhance their performance repertoire by adding hand bell pieces to their musical performances.
Your contribution will help bring hand/desk bells and the necessary supplies to my classroom.
This project will provide enough bells so that each student (in one classroom) can participate simultaneously with at least one hand bell. Although this project is listed for grades 3-5, please be aware that the hand/desk bells will be available for all K-5 students at our school. The equipment obtained through this project will be utilized for many years. Thank you for your consideration.
