Hamlet Performance 12/9/2015

My students need to enjoy Shakespeare the way it was meant to be--live on stage, through a performance of Hamlet on their campus.

My Students

Very few of my students have been to the theater, and almost none have seen a Shakespearean play. It will be highly educational and engaging for them to enjoy a performance of Hamlet after having read and studied it for weeks.

My students are middle-to-low income.

Their parents largely work in the service sector, and most of them have not attended college. In spite of this, my students are bright, engaged, and thirsty to learn about life outside of their town. Our school is good but under-resourced. We have class sizes of up to 36, and frequently use old books and outdated supplies.

My Project

Students will get to experience a professional performance of one of Shakespeare's finest plays, and will thus get to experience Shakespeare as it's intended to be experienced. My students will learn how a Shakespeare play is staged, as well as how professional actors interpret the text. They will be able to then reflect on the experience of reading the play versus seeing it, and write about those differences in a reflection essay.

My students' counterparts in wealthier districts may have far more opportunities to attend the theater and go to arts events in general.

This creates an "arts gap" between the richer and poorer districts in terms of access to quality arts programming. This project will allow me the opportunity to help "close the arts gap" that exists for my students. It will also allow my students the exposure to something they may never have had the chance to experience otherwise.
