This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As the music teacher of the only non-audition based music school in New York City, I strive to give my students every opportunity. Our school was opened less than 15 years ago with the mission to give all students, regardless of their prior knowledge, an opportunity to learn and grow in the arts.
Over 95% of the students are of black or Hispanic heritage, and over 85% qualify for free or reduced-priced lunch.
Although many of our students' math and reading skills fall below grade level, they are intelligent, passionate, and all performers at heart.
My Project
Our musical theater program is in it's second year and is rapidly growing! Students are anxiously awaiting the unveiling of this year's curriculum, excited to explore a variety of topics from lights, to stage direction, to performance components.
As we explore the various areas of theater these books will help us explore the creation of one of the most popular musicals currently on Broadway.
This November our students will have the ability to attend a performance of Hamilton, and this book will help us explore all of the avenues that our students will be able to see in front of them on stage in just a few short months. Your donation will make this possible!
