My students need a new round of books for hallway reading. To save money, I managed to find a box set of 20 of his books that include the best of Dr. Seuss!
My kindergarten students are enthusiastic about reading!
We are a small rural school in Michigan hard at work cultivating a culture of readers.
I am working to expand their access to reading and show them that it can move beyond the classroom, and into the hallway. The children have been immersed in a powerful variety of literature. In October they explored Caldecott Books. In November it was Reading Rainbow Books. For December they read books about the sciences. In January, they laughed their way through Theodor Seuss Geisel Awarded Books, and in February/March, they explored a whole new world of cultural immersion with Ezra Jack Keats Award Books! In April, we hope to laugh and giggle our way through books authored by Dr. Seuss as we learn about poetry and celebrate the joy of rhyming!
My Project
This school year I have tried to find creative ways to inspire reading in my children. Thinking outside the house, I brought reading into the hallway while we are waiting to use the bathroom. It has been a huge hit with my five and six-year-old students.
By tying in reading, a bathroom break, and Leader in Me, my students have developed a passion and joy for reading like no class before them!
During our bathroom break in the hallway, the children have had the opportunity to explore different books every month. Since the start of the school year, they have explored: Caldecott Award Books, Reading Rainbow Books, Science Books, Theodor Seuss Geisel Award Books and Ezra Jack Keats Award Books. This month we are ready to take on books written by a kindergarten favorite author: Dr. Seuss! We have tied in Leader in Me by taking time to make a plan and share what books they are going to read when they get out of the bathroom, which has really quickened our breaks.
At this time in the school year, my students are becoming true readers and embracing literacy. They are sounding out words. They are playing teacher and sharing parts of a book. And they LOVE to rhyme. I can only imagine what they are going to do if they have the comfort of sharing favorite books they know with their friends. Hopefully, they will even embrace some of his other, lesser-known works, as they joyfully explore the amazing, welcoming world of Dr. Seuss!
