Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keeping things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences, as well as an inviting learning environment.
My students face so many challenges, but they realize that education is the vehicle to drive them towards a more promising future.
From the minute my students walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hoping to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.
My Project
Our school is located in a community where there is extremely limited exposure to the arts. Although students love art class in school, there are very few, if any, murals in their neighborhoods. With this in mind, we strive to provide students with everything they need and can imagine within our school. I believe that art education trains our country's youth to become productive, contributing and creative members of society. This project will include having students brainstorming why we must take responsibility for caring for our multi-cultural, diversity and inclusion. Next, they will collaborate with the renowned Joe McKinney, who is the most highly sought after muralist in the state of South Carolina, to bring the multi-cultural, diversity and inclusion murals to life.
This collaboration will make our students aware of their responsibility to cherish and preserve the World around them.
Our students will also embrace a newfound pride in their own capabilities as artists!
