I teach different groups of 21 to 24 first graders with a wide range of reading and math abilities. Our charter school focuses on individualization and helping to meet our students' needs at their level. We ability group our students, and move our students during reading as well as math time between the different classes in their grade. This helps them receive instruction at the pace that works best for their needs.
They find pride in themselves as they are challenged and see themselves succeed in their classes.
My students love to discover new books, new words, and new ways to solve math problems each day!
I teach the middle level of reading and math students which means I am facing a wide group of students with different abilities. We help them succeed through rotating them through centers to receive instruction. I work with a small group, while my aid teaches another group, and any other groups are working independently. My students love the movement between activities and are eager to learn with their groups.
My Project
My students are constantly improving and passing off new reading and math skills. They know how to work hard, but sometimes need extra help in pushing their education. I currently have a small square desk where I hold my reading materials and distribute them to my students as they are expected to sit on the floor and read while I am working with other students one-on-one at my desk. I would like to have this reading table to help give my students a place to focus, where I can monitor their reading as a group, and with the individual. This space will also help my aid have a space to pull students to provide math interventions, instead of only being able to pull one student at a time. Working as a group can help motivate and move forward more of our students.
This project will improve the quality of my reading instruction and math interventions, which will help my students succeed.
