This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As a committed teacher in a low-income, high-poverty school district, I know my students are faced with daily challenges both in and out of the classroom. My school is located in the East Flatbush section of Brooklyn, NY. About five percent of our students are homeless or live in shelters, and another two percent live in foster homes. Many more are raised by a single parent or grandparents.
Despite these challenges, my students love to learn and being in school.
They are fun-loving second graders who are avid readers and enjoy academic activities with their friends. They are all well-behaved and caring and help each other at every opportunity. The classroom is the only outlet for a large number to have fun and learn at the same time!
The saying goes, "It takes a village to raise a child.” My school in East Flatbush, Brooklyn, lives by this motto every day.

My Project
I would like to provide my students with the opportunity to see the Lion King on Broadway; although only a few miles away from Brooklyn in Manhattan, it is a world away from their day-to-day experiences. My Lion King experience was awesome and I know it would make a significant impression on my students, who can be considered predominantly economically disadvantaged. In the song, The Circle of the Life, the chorus says, "There’s more to see than can ever be seen, more to do than can ever be done. There’s far too much to take in here, more to find than can ever be found."
There's so much more my students could see and experience, but they do not get opportunities.
This will be the first Broadway show experience for them. Help me give my students a memorable experience that will stay with them for the rest of their lives and will have a positive impact. Please help me make my students smile from ear to ear, and give them a glimpse of the world beyond their immediate situations with a live Broadway show that is bound to make an impression and encourage their creativity.
