We are a small, public K-12 charter school that focuses on social-emotional learning, student-led problem-based community service projects, and strong academics leading to all students leaving us with either scholarships to college or a career. Due to being a charter we receive about 20% funding compared to 100% funding of a neighborhood district school Consequently, we rely on our parents, staff, fundraising events, and grants or in-kind donations from community contacts through our 501 (C) (3) Foundation to fund our various projects.
Our students look forward to their community service days and are excited to start the National Wildlife Federation's Garden for Wildlife at our school.
We have 6 acres to work with surrounding our building.
We have partnered with Green Apple Day of Service, Denver Audubon, Colorado Department of Wildlife and other community members to assist in the logistics of this ambitious project decided by our 5th-12th graders. We are working on partnering with Arbor Day Society and local nurseries to provide the native trees and shrubs for the garden.
**COVID 19 note** Due to county mandated stay at home orders from 3/16-4/17, this project has been moved to next school year.
My Project
The items requested will allow our students to work alongside the professionals donating time and resources to increase ownership of our garden. These items will enable students to sustain the garden once it has been established by our community partners.
Increased practical knowledge about creating and sustaining a garden to support our native wildlife, trees and plants is the expected learning outcome.
This is a long term project starting with research, planning then implementation of the plan. The items requested will be used for implementation, especially sustainability of the Heroes for Habitat Garden plan.
Mini lessons include lessons on the how and why it's important to:
Create a habitat for birds and other wildlife by planting gardens with native plants.
Research on each of the following objectives will be done by the students prior to the outside landscaping and gardening work:
What are the diverse native plants that will be best suited to our school's 6 acres?
What are the best seeds, shelter and nesting sites for native birds?
What is the best way to provide nectar, pollen, and host plants for pollinators (butterflies, bees, etc)?
How much water will be conserved through xeriscaping and sustainable gardening?
What are the best natural and native fertilizers and pesticides to not damage our environment?
What are the invasive species of plants to watch for and best way to stop their spread?
