My students need water wheels, funnels, water whisks, and water marbles to create opportunities for lessons on volume as well as expand scientific reasoning and interests.
The children in my classroom are 4 years old and for many this is their first experience in school. Seeing the excitement on their faces as they participate in the classroom for the first time is priceless! Our school is a Great Start Readiness Program which is a state funded program for children who are at risk. Our goal is to provide children with a strong foundation in academics and social skills to be successful inside and outside of school.
My preschool class is comprised of 16 amazing students, all of whom come from bilingual households and receive free or reduced price lunch.
Providing my students with opportunities and experiences they may not be able to participate in at home is essential to prepare them for later school experiences.
My Project
Preschool aged children learn best through hands on experiences. Providing materials that children can touch and feel make academic concepts meaningful in a way that worksheets cannot. Water is an especially potent teaching experience for young children as it enhances a child's physical, cognitive, and social skills.
When children pour water, they are improving their academic reasoning, physical dexterity, and hand-eye coordination.
Providing water wheels, funnels, water whisks, and water marbles will create opportunities for lessons on volume as well as expand my students scientific reasoning and interests. We will use these materials in our class to explore cause and effect by making predictions about what will happpen to the water as it flows through the funnels and wheels. Water marbles will be used for math and literacy lessons such as counting the number of marbles in the water table and using water marbles to form letters in the water table. Sensory bins will provide a place for materials to be within reach to children at all times.
