In my school district, three small towns join in one community school district. Our building is home to children from Pre-K through grade three. Our students in Kindergarten through third grade have one Physical Education class per day in the gym attached to the Multi-Purpose Room. Travel to and from both class and school wide recesses take place through this area as well. Our students eat both breakfast and lunch in the MPR and some also have snack through our after school program in this location. The MPR is a common area where students in all grade levels travel through or sit within multiple times per day. This is why it is important to me to have refillable water bottle stations centrally located in this room.
Our students currently make a positive impact we are proud of by recycling cardboard, paper, and plastic caps within our school building, but we want to take this one step further to help eliminate plastic waste by offering a water bottle filling station in our common MPR area for reusable water bottles to be refilled.
My Project
Help me give the students and families in our community a sanitary and communal place in school to refill water bottles while simultaneously helping save our environment by reusing bottles rather than disposing of them in the garbage. Our school multipurpose room and gymnasium are used by many community groups and sports teams who are also using the water fountains as well as a main travel area for students in our building throughout the day.
It is my hope that with the addition of a water fountain that has a bottle filler, we will not only increase student and athlete water consumption, but we will also lessen the use of disposable plastic products and our ecological footprint.
A unique feature of bottle filler fountains is they show how many bottles have been filled, therefore, saved from the landfills. What an environmental lesson for children to actually see the impact refilling their bottles has on the planet!
A goal is to continue to add a hands-free bottle filling station to each water fountain area within our school building. Fellow teachers have been encouraging to and some even asked me to jump start this process in hopes that we can continue to add sanitary filling stations to our school campus and help make a positive lifestyle change for children to drink more water and refill to refuel.
