My students come from a rural to suburban area of southern Indiana. They have varying backgrounds of ability that I will work with throughout the year, but their backgrounds also allow for a unique perspective to be presented to their peers. Unfortunately, they are in a school that is in need of repair and where equipment has not been updated. I am slowly but surely updating the physics equipment from donors like you so that the students can have a first rate lab experience in my class.
My Project
One of our standards is learning the ratio of atoms in molecules. Students down to the elementary level know the formula for water is H2O, but do they know what that actually means? It says that there are two atoms of hydrogen for every one atom of oxygen.
With the electrolysis kit, an electric current is used to split water into oxygen and hydrogen and students will be able to see that there is twice as much hydrogen than there is oxygen once it separates.
It is a visual hands on equipment that confirms something they have already been told but never seen first hand. I strive to make all my classes as hands on as possible. The more time in the lab, the better.
