Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students in my classes are the lowest academically in the district and also struggle with behavior in a large class setting. My classroom is designed to get students back up to grade level and improve behavior. The students come from all over the district, from a variety of other schools to get targeted academic interventions in order to get them more prepared for their grade level classroom. They come from very low socioeconomic house holds. Most are not used to having structure, so a regular class of 30 is too much stimulation for them. My class provides smaller numbers and a higher level of teacher interaction and relationships. My class is a second chance for students who have given up on themselves.
My Project
Students in our program are not able to participate in traditional special classes like gym, art, and music. As the teachers, we take them to the gym to run around and play to work on social skills and give them the opportunity to burn off some energy. Currently, they only have a few old sports balls to play with that they have to share between all of them.
We are hoping to get a variety of physical education options for students to use that are geared to their different interests.
Having variety will give the students choices and not force them to play the same thing each time they go to the gym. This will also give them the opportunity to work on team building and character education.
