Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a neighborhood high school in a low-income neighborhood on the far south eastside of Chicago. Most of our students are first-generation – coming from families with no college degrees. Our school has made great strides in college enrollment over the past five years. Our last graduating class currently has 66% college enrollment rate! Our students are excited to enroll in college! They have worked hard all year applying to colleges and scholarships and this is our one way to celebrate their postsecondary achievement.
We want to set them off on the right foot and get them excited about life after high school.
My Project
On May 4th, we will have an assembly to celebrate the seniors who are enrolling in college. It is our student’s favorite event every year where they get to cheer on their peers as they come on stage to make their college decision public. We will use these items to create a fun and exciting atmosphere for our celebration. We will also raffle off the electronics/gadgets and school supplies to give students some materials they need for college. The majority of our students commute to different colleges in the area and we wanted to give them items that would make their commute and studying on campus a little easier. More specifically, providing technology such as tablets and chargers will ensure that our students have the tools to succeed both on and off campus.
We invite community members, staff, and families to the event to show students that they are supported in their postsecondary decisions.
