The cost of books, including How To Eat Fried Worms and A Series of Unfortunate Events, is $262, including shipping and <a target="new" href="http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm" onclick="g_openWindow('http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm', 300, 800, 'fulfillwindow');return false;">fulfillment</a>.
As a sixth-grade English Language Arts teacher, I frequently find that many of the boys in my class are reluctant readers. Much of this has to do with the fact that there is a lack of "high interest" books in our classroom libraries. This year, the proportion of girls to boys is not balanced. There are far more boys than girls in our sixth grade, and there aren't enough high-interest novels to go around for the fellows! I would really like to offer the boys (and the girls, too!) a wider selection of great books.
I work in an elementary school that began the process of becoming a K-8 school this year with a brand new sixth grade. It is a very exciting opportunity for all of the students and the teachers. However, we really need some more resources, specifically in our classroom libraries!
Jon Scieszka, a really great writer, has a website, guysread.com. It's a well-designed site that tries to encourage young male readers to make reading a priority. There are several titles mentioned on his site that look enticing, and I know that the addition of these books would definitely hook some of these reluctant readers. I want to try my best to show my students how fun and rewarding reading really is.
For this "Guys Read!" library, the materials necessary are: books, lots and lots of books! I teach two different classes of ELA, so in total there would be approximately 50 students participating (just because the books are geared for the boys doesn't mean the girls can't enjoy them also). Many of the books on the guys read site are favorites of mine from my pre-adolescence.
One of the major reasons why I teach middle school students is because I think the children are at a critical age where they can find the importance and joy of learning (and reading), but it's also a time when they can be swayed in the other direction. I try to motivate my students and keep their natural love of learning afloat and thriving! If the boys in my classes who are struggling readers to begin with can benefit from having these great novels at their fingertips, then I know it will have helped.
Thank you.
