My music students look forward to getting together every week for a musical experience in which they listen to music, learn to to read notes and rhythms, sing, and play percussion instruments from around the globe. My students live in a rural agricultural community and many of them receive free or reduced price lunch. My students come from diverse backgrounds and many of them speak English as their second language.

Throughout the year the surrounding community attends a variety of school events. Students embrace these times to come together and share their songs.
My Project
During music we sing songs from a variety of cultures. Chinese New Year is a perfect time to bring in Chinese instruments such as the Gong and monkey drum for students to play. These instruments will be in the music room for students to visit and play throughout the year. Students from grades TK-6 will be introduced to these instruments and have access to them. We will discuss how and when they would be used such as during the Lunar New Year.
Students will love ringing the gong with symbols that translate to "the good shall come, the bad shall go." Happy New Year!
