Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school serves over 800 students in grades K-8 who come from a high poverty/low income neighborhood, and one of the most historic in the city. One hundred percent of the student population qualify for free and reduced lunch. Our staff consists of teachers who are dedicated to instilling our motto of "Si se puede" (Yes, we can) in all students.
Music is new to the school and the community is excited about the variety of musical opportunities being provided to them.
This is the first year the school district has hired a full-time certificated music teacher. My goal is to provide students with a variety of music making experiences, while building community in the school and local neighborhood. All students deserve to be provided with the opportunity of discovering what music means to them through music making activities.
I believe music can be one way to bring a group of people together. It is a way to define your identity, something that students of all age groups can use to express themselves. Offering creative outlets provides balance to people of all ages, at home, work and in the community.
My Project
Our students have just begun to learn how to play the acoustic guitar. We only have enough guitars for a third of the class, but we are waiting for the arrival for a full class set. Currently, we are storing the guitars inside of a tall cabinet. The cabinet is big enough for 6 acoustic guitars, with padding cut out from cardboard boxes to make sure the guitars are kept safe from dings and scratches.
Your generous donation will help us keep our classroom organized while providing a safe place to store our guitars when they are not being played.
We have one additional cabinet that will be able to store 6 more guitars, but space is still limited. When doing the math, you can see we only have space to securely and safely store 12 guitars but we will have a total of 35 guitars very soon that need a home. The materials in this project will help provide storage for 15 guitars.
