My Students

I teach in a rural, consolidated district, consisting of 6 different towns. To keep the doors open, and bus rides for my students under an hour, our district has brought the whole district, pre-kindergarten through 12th grade, under one roof.

My school reaches a high poverty population.

Some of my students lack running water and electricity at their homes. Many cannot afford the basic necessities for school, and roughly 85% of my students receive free or reduced lunches. However, my students love - and excel in- the fine arts, specifically music.

Over 75% of our total student body is enrolled in one of my classes. They excel at music, but we lack in resources.

My Project

Our students have had access to a guitar class for several years, but students have always been expected to purchase their own guitar to participate. Generally, guitar class has only been offered at the high school level, but I see an increasing need in the middle school level for more participation in arts and hands on centered classes.

This project will provide students who would not otherwise be able to afford a guitar, the opportunity to participate in our guitar class program.

I would like to expand our program to reach the middle school students and take the burden of purchasing an instrument out of the equation.

With the addition of a ukulele program in our elementary school, more students come into middle school with a basic knowledge of string instruments. We've had a very successful program at the high school level, but with recent economic conditions, I've seen a drop in the students who can afford an instrument to participate in class. This program will help us to put instruments in those students who will most benefit from the positive effects of music education.
