Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school provides every student with music class every day! Each day, my students are eager to learn and try new things. With our new modern band program, engagement has grown even more! Students are often signing up for time outside of the regular class period to work on writing or learning new songs, but many do not have access to instruments outside of school. Our school is mostly low income families and finances often have to go toward other things like food, housing, and clothes. Students that are lucky enough to have their own instruments at home are often asking me to find them chords to play along with songs that they are listening to at home. Most of my students are also English Language Learners and this unique program allows them to learn music that they are passionate about which is not always represented in traditional curriculum.
My Project
Our school is part of a program called Little Kids Rock. This program brings music education to students using modern band instruments such as guitars, pianos, ukuleles, and drums. Our students and families LOVE it and many students are in the classroom outside of class time jamming out and learning.
Our goal is to get guitars and pianos for our returning students so that they can practice at home and continue making music!
Our school is made up of mostly low-income families where buying an instrument may not be something that is realistic. Many of the middle schools in our area do not have a music program so once my students leave, they often lose access to these instruments. Students that already have instruments at home are consistently going above and beyond what they are asked to do in the classroom because they love what they are doing. These instruments will be going home with the students so that they can continue their music making dreams, even beyond elementary school. I would love for as many students as possible to have this opportunity to thrive. Students will submit an application (written or video) where they talk about what instrument they would like to own and why. Students will be chosen based on the application process as well as how many instruments we can get funding for. Every little bit helps!
