Help me give my students new guitar strings for broken ones in class.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
The students love to work and learn new things. The guitar classes bring something new and exciting to their school days. The class environment is very diverse, race and gender wise. Each day they know the task at hand, and love to challenge themselves and get ahead of the curve.
Many of my students come from some not so pleasant backgrounds or homes and school is their only outlet.
They really just need to find their outlet that will make a positive change in their lives. Music is that thing. Kids tell me daily that guitar is their favorite class or they don't know what they would do without it. Some students even bring their own guitars to school and stay after school for rehearsals.
My guitar students love to learn and play the guitar but with the lack of supplies for class it makes it very difficult to get them to learn and focus on the assignment at hand. We have about forty guitars available for use but more than 60% of them are missing strings. We have recently started working with playing chords in class, and for most of them you need all the strings.
The class can share the few working instruments but that only goes so far.
Especially with their being 30+ students in each class and 50 min class periods everyday. It doesn't leave much time for students to get a full understanding and master certain techniques and exercises on the guitar. With all the down time in between practicing students tend to get off task and unfocused, leaving them behind and not wanting to do any work. That puts the pressure on me because I understand what is going on but there is not much I can do to help with the situation.
I hope that someone can help with the dilemma we are currently faced with, and I know the students would love if we could acquire the supplies we need to fully function in class daily.
