Our students come from very diverse backgrounds with a multitude of cultures and experiences. There are over 30 different languages spoken in the community my students come from. Furthermore, our students live in a high poverty area which creates unique challenges that they must overcome to be successful in school.
Despite diversity and daily challenges, our students, teachers and parents work together to form a unique, successful, and caring community.
In addition to high academic standards, my school focuses on music. Every student participates in a performing group including band, guitar, strings, and vocals. Our music program is one of the reasons our students are so successful both in the classroom and as a community. Being in a performing ensemble fosters teamwork, creativity, and a strong sense of belonging. These are hallmarks of the students at our school.
My Project
We are a music conservatory that is greatly underfunded. Despite multiple budget cuts to our music program, we are working hard to find resources to continue the quality music program for our students. Being our students are facing multiple life obstacles to be successful in school, we are dedicated to providing music as a support to them. Research shows that music programs benefit students in academics, problem solving, and social skills. Our program consists of 4th and 5th grade students that participate in Guitar Ensemble twice a week with an experienced guitar instructor.
The guitars and cases that the students currently use are old and falling apart.
These guitars need to be replaced in order to continue the program and foster the success of the students. Furthermore, due to the poor condition of the cases and guitars, our young musicians do not have the opportunity to take the instruments home to practice and improve their skills on a regular basis. Please help us purchase new guitars and guitar cases for our students. These new guitars will enable our students to continue learning, practicing, and performing with the guitar ensemble, and to reap the emotional, social, and academic benefits of participating in our music program.
