My Students
Do you remember your first experiences in music class, singing songs while moving around the room as the teacher accompanies on the guitar? Or learning nursery rhymes, field trip songs, playground songs, and campfire songs with the guitar driving the group’s energy? All of my kindergarten through sixth grade music students can benefit from having a guitar for me to accompany them on during songs. Exposure to the guitar from a young age will help my students as they prepare for a guitar unit in the 5th/6th grade. In this unit, students will learn basic guitar skills, positions, how to care for the instrument, and how to go about teaching themselves so they can continue after my class!
My students represent a culturally diverse, majority-minority, high poverty, school-wide free and reduced lunch, public school in the State of Washington.
My students represent a high Transitional Bilingual (also known as English Language Learner) population of 45.6% and special education services rate of 12.4% (Washington State Report Card, 2016). My instruction provides universal access to an essential, non-STEM content area. They love to learn new things and for many students, music class is where they can feel most successful.
My Project
This project is necessary to obtain guitar supplies to accompany all of my students during singing and movement activities in the music room. This acoustic-electric guitar is also made to be plugged into my school's PA system for concerts and musicals in the future. Having this guitar during my 5th and 6th grade guitar unit in the spring will also provide them with a model. Last year, the Kent School District came out of a budget freeze and is currently sitting in a tight budget reduction that has restricted spending in the arts, a core component of cultural identity among our diverse student population.
Your support of this project will provide materials for my kindergarten through sixth grade music students as they experience music activities and develop a passion towards playing the guitar after my class.
In addition to the guitar, your donation will help provide other necessary guitar supplies such as picks to play it, extra strings, and a stand to prevent the guitar from accidentally getting damaged when not being used.
