How many times have you listened to a person play piano or guitar and said, "I wish I had taken lessons as a kid?" Our innovative middle school music program teaches our kids to play instruments that will help them sustain their music making for the rest of their lives!
Our scholars are boys (in the Boys' Middle School) and girls (in the Girls' Middle School) who choose to come to our school to get a strong education that will help them choose to go to college.
We have high academic standards and equally rigorous fine and performing arts standards. They work very hard and many of them go on to become successful high school and college students, ending the generational poverty trend of their neighborhoods.
My Project
We are requesting 4 guitars because our school is growing. We have 19 guitars but sometimes 22-23 scholars are in a class. We sometimes have to share guitars because there are not currently enough for each scholar to practice. With 4 new guitars we will have enough to allow each scholar to practice in music class. Our 6th and 7th graders spend much of their music class on guitars and become quite proficient and even singer/songwriters by the end.
This is an incredibly successful project at our school.
Our scholars are learning to become adept musicians who can use songwriting to express emotions and frustrations of their surroundings rather than violence. The program is in its 3rd year and we can't wait to provide high quality music instruction with 4 additional guitars!
