I teach at a school for "at-risk" students. My students aren't your typical standard classroom-type learners, and they have slipped through the cracks in our educational system.
Our music class has motivated our school.
Students are coming to school excited to learn guitar and ukulele. Not only are students learning a great skill through music, but the class is motivating them to make great progress in all academic areas. We have many different levels of skills and abilities in class. However, we have established an inviting environment where students are teaching other students and encouraging everyone at different levels.
My Project
Our music class has been a great way to unlock the potential of high school students. Our students are 'at-risk' or behind in credits; most of these students have slipped through the cracks in a traditional school environment. The goal of the guitar and ukulele class is to motivate students toward learning.
Music class has been great at rebuilding a desire for students to be successful at school.
Attendance has improved, and students' grades are rising in all subjects for students involved in our music class.
We need to keep building our music class to reach more students. This class is not funded like other subjects at our school, and we are relying on donations to keep the class going. Students are waiting to get into the class, and we cannot accommodate all of the demand. We need more supplies to encourage students to grow. Students are gravitating towards electric guitar and we don't have enough. The electric guitar would be used every day and would inspire students to learn more about music and rebuild a love for learning
