Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Music is the art of thinking with sounds," (Jules Compare). Do you remember what it was like the first time you played a musical instrument? My students have not yet discovered the notes and melodies that capture their imaginations. My students need five acoustic guitars and three stands to begin Phase 1 of our Young Musician Institute.
My students are 7th and 8th graders attending a K-12 school in an urban neighborhood located in So.
California. Our school provides college preparatory curriculum in the core content areas. However, as a start up, we do not yet have a music program. Therefore, for our annual project, each of my Advisory students wrote about how we can collectively use the $15 Wasserman Gift Card to improve our learning experience. Topics included: reading, art, field trips, and music. Needless to say, music won.
In their own words:
"I would want to spend it on something memorable, like an instrument. In my old school, they had trumpets, pianos, violins, guitars, flutes, and a choir band... how beautify they sounded, all the melodies in sync and well rehearsed." (E., 13 years old)
"So students can share their musical talents at school!" (P., 12 years old)
My Project
Our school needs a music program! Help us get started by supporting this student centered project. With your support, we'll begin Phase 1 of our Young Musician Institute. The project will create the space for our students to discover the sound of music and deepen their appreciation of string instruments.
The goal is twofold:
1) for our students to discover the freedom of expression found in music.
2) for our students to become self-directed in their own learning.
Imagine, the young musicians writing their own lyrics, practicing at their own pace. We recognize that music appreciation is a critical course for our adolescents. It is an alternative way to provide students the space to express their voice creatively and practice perseverance daily. Sure, all this takes time, patience, and lots of practice. We can't wait until we share our first performance with our families, friends, and school community.
Can you hear it?
The musicians tapping their feet to the percussion, their fingers wrestling with the strings, and their voices painting colorful notes. Together we can provide our youngsters rich opportunities to develop into musically powerful children.
"I think music in itself is healing. It's an explosive expression of humanity. It's something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we're from, everyone loves music." ~ Billy Joel
