My Students
My students are the movers and shakers of the next generation in this rural town. They live in the same town that inspired me to become a third generation teacher to this school. We are a challenged rural school serving some military families with over 60% Free and Reduced lunches for students. Backpacks with food are sent home with needy students each weekend. Despite the economic challenge they face, these students are bright and willing learners. They know that education will improve the quality of life for them and their families.
My Project
For the past 10 years I have been teaching guitar to my 3rd, 4th and 5th graders. They absolutely love it and we are having a great time. We are learning how to read and play tabs and simplified chords.
Having a guitar for every student, facilitates success with the instrument.
We can maximize time on the instrument as only 45 minutes 2-3 times a week is allotted for music. Due to the current economic situation in our state, my class size continues to grow. We currently need one more guitar so that every student in my largest class of 32 will have an instrument to practice on.
