My Students

This year I started a guitar class, and it has been a phenomenal success. We have about 50 students enrolled in 4 sections of guitar classes this year. My original plan was to have every student supply their own guitars, but that hasn't really worked out.

We have a pretty economically depressed area, and we have a lot of students that do not have the ability to get their own instruments.

Once it became apparent we were going to be short on instruments, a couple of kids were able to get their own, and I was able to borrow three guitars from the middle school, but they don't really have any more to offer. I had two of my own at home I brought in to use for class. We are doing OK for now, but next semester my classes are bigger and I want to be ready in case we end up short again. Plus if we have any guitars that need a string changed or if anyone forgets to bring theirs in, we end up short.

My Project

Luckily, there are plenty of inexpensive guitars available these days. So finding decent instruments for class use will not be a huge deal. For less than $50 each, I will be able to get a guitar for class use, which will help make sure I have enough instruments for all of my students to use. I also have asked for a footstool/ guitar stand to use while in front of the class.

Learning guitar is a great skill, and I feel it is a valid addition to the school curriculum.

Guitar is a relatively simple instrument to pick up and learn, and can be found in every genre of music from classical to country. Since it is simple, portable and easy to play, guitar is truly a life-long music-making adventure!
