Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My first grade classroom is located in an urban, K-5 public school in New Bedford, MA. Most of my students come from low-income households and many of them also speak English as their second language.
Even with all of these challenges they face, my students always come into the classroom eager to learn something new!
It is my goal everyday to create a safe, welcoming and fun environment for my students to walk into. They need a place to become academically successful, build positive relationships and be ready to take on the world we live in!
My Project
Guided reading is one of the most important parts of the day in my classroom. In first grade, my students need to learn how to read and write.
Guided reading time is precious and I want to make the best of the short time they have with me at my table.
Magnetic letters will give my students more practice with manipulating letters for both phonics lessons and sight word practice; two vital components for learning to read! The whisper phones will allow my students to hear themselves as they read. These phones are hands free which will allow my students to focus their hands on pointing to words and turning the pages.
Both the magnetic letters and the whisper phones will be an added to support for all of the children in my classroom, including my high population of English Language Learners.
