I need to attend a one-week professional development conference at Teachers College Columbia University to further develop my skills in teaching reading.
I have 27 amazing students who are very enthusiastic about learning! They come in each day excited to see what they will learn about next. School is an opportunity for them to develop in so many different ways; we work to become better readers, writers, mathematicians, and friends. Our classroom is a community and we all work to help each other learn and grow.
They are still quite little, but they think very deeply about the world around them.
They ask big questions, come up with new ideas, and bring a smile to the faces of the adults who get to work with them. I love being their teacher and want to learn as much as possible about teaching in order to support them in growing all the more.
My Project
I have been lucky enough to work with Teachers College at Columbia University over the past few years of my teaching career. The professional development offered by this organization has raised the level of my teaching, and in turn, helped my students develop their literacy skills in amazing ways.
My students are thoughtful readers and writers who engage deeply with texts.
When they read, they go on adventures along with their characters, laughing and gasping as they empathize with these new friends. They dive into informational books, readily sharing new and interesting facts and ideas with anyone willing to lend an ear.
By participating in this professional development conference, I will be able to take my teaching of reading to the next level. It will raise the bar on how I teach students to read across various genres, grow new ideas about texts, and develop a lifelong love of reading.
