Do you remember the joy you felt as a student when your
teacher praised you for your good work or for your effort in the classroom?
There is no better feeling than receiving positive reinforcement or praise! As an English as a New Language (ENL) teacher to students with special needs in a low-income school district, my students are faced with many challenges both in and out of the classroom. As their ENL teacher I am looking to make their experience in the school setting as welcoming and stress-free as possible. I want to provide my students with meaningful learning experiences. I want them to take educational risks without being afraid. Nearly 60% of English Language Learners nationwide are from low-income families in which parents have “disproportionately” limited levels of education. (Grantmakers in Education) Although we may not be able to control their lives outside of school, we can certainly control their experience during the school day. I am hopeful to inspire even the earliest learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.
A new guided reading table will greatly enhance our reading groups. I am an ENL (English as a New Language) co-teacher and I push-in to three different classrooms. Guided reading is my opportunity to teach reading strategies and intensive phonics instruction to my students. Students enjoy being able to meet with their reading group and explore a new book. My students love to explore books and read to each other. Now they need a place to read together! I meet with guided reading groups on a daily basis.
It is my responsibility to foster a love of reading in my students.
We are currently using a small rectangle table for guided reading. During instruction, it is challenging to check in with each student. A kidney table would make it easier to work with individual students. Each reader will be within the same proximity to the teacher. Reading skills will flourish for my students with a guided reading table!
