Each school year, I am blessed with a wonderful group of students. Throughout our year together my students grow so much and in so many different ways. Although we have support from our parents and the community, there are still some resources that are not readily available to the teachers or our students.
Our school is a Title I School in a small, rural community with a student population of approximately 600 students.
My students come from various economic backgrounds, and there are many instances where families simply aren't able to provide a wide variety of materials for the most efficient student learning. The students simply use what is available to them. I would love to provide them with more hands-on opportunities to learn.
My Project
Our reading instruction is currently undergoing some changes to best fit the needs of our students. We are moving in the direction of a guided reading approach. This approach will help us better meet the needs of our students at their current reading level so they can be more successful. With this success, students should also show more growth in their reading over the year.
In order to best use our guided reading books, my students need them organized in bins on a cart so they are easily accessible to them.
We have a good size classroom library and have our books organized in multiple ways. Now that we are beginning to level the books using their guided reading level and use them daily, we need a better kid-friendly way to organize them. By using the book cart with labeled bins the students and I will be able to easily find books on the appropriate level.
