Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The bilingual learners in my classroom are so inspiring! As a part of the Dual Language program at my school, my 4th graders spend their day speaking, listening, reading, and writing in both Spanish and English. I support their literacy development by working with them in small groups based on reading ability. These Guided Reading groups are critical to challenge advanced readers and provide targeted support for students not meeting grade level expectations.
Help me maximize our guided reading time with a set of Scholastic Short Reads.
This resource will help me teach skills specific to each ability group and will advance reading proficiency for a vulnerable, and promising, group of bilingual students.
My Project
My classroom lacks Guided Reading fiction texts with accompanying teachers' guides that target various levels of comprehension. Scholastic Short Reads will fill that gap and help all my students, regardless of reading ability, advance as readers. These instructional materials have narratives similar to what students will see on standardized tests and each level teaches specific comprehension skills. The five levels I've asked for meet the needs of students below, above, and meeting grade level standards. These texts are just the right length for a 20 minute guided reading session. During guided reading, I meet with a small group of students who are reading at the same level of comprehension and fluency. My lesson specifically targets skills they are lacking at that level in order to advance them to higher levels of complexity in narrative text. Thanks to Donor's Choose, I already have a set of nonfiction Short Reads in Spanish.
What I have requested will complete my Guided Reading library in both languages!
My bilingual students need support for fluency and comprehension in BOTH of the languages they speak.
