Teaching kindergartners and first graders to read involves many different techniques and approaches. Reading aloud, modeled reading, shared reading, modeled writing, phonics instruction, and guided reading are many of the different components which make up a balanced literacy curriculum. Guided Reading is a critical component. It is when a small group of 3-5 students reading at the same level sit and work with me for about twenty minutes. Each child has a copy of that day's book. I model fluent reading, calling students' attention to important high-frequency words, punctuation, and more. Then, each child reads the book, and I provide scaffolding and take running records. I meet with two-three groups per day so that I hear each child reading independently several times per week. I'm sure this method is to thank for the high level of reading success in my room. In my kindergarten classroom, I have readers from level B all the way to level J (Mid first grade) and it is challenging to gather enough multiple copies of guided reading books for my groups! A donation of sets of guided reading books would mean so much to our class and would help me teach better. If there are more books to be read, the kids will be better readers! Thank you for your time!
