I teach second grade in a K-7 school in a small beach town. Our school is a Title I school. A majority of our students come from low-income homes and all receive free or reduced-price lunch. After my first year has come to an abrupt end, I have realized how important our guided reading time was to my students and their development. I meet with all of my students in small groups (based on their abilities) for about 20 minutes each day for our guided reading time. These 20 minutes are crucial to their success as developing readers. I try to make this time fun and engaging for my students so that they develop a love for reading. My students have really grown to love this time and have grown into excellent readers!
Guided reading is such a beneficial and special time between students and their teachers. It is often during this 15-20 minute period where students make the most gains in their reading. It is where they learn to use tools and strategies to help them to become the best readers they can be!
The materials within this project will all help to make my guided reading time not only more engaging for my students but more beneficial as well!
Many of these materials will allow my students to be hands-on in their literacy learning which is so important.
For example, my students will use the kinetic sand and letter stamps to stamp out and read their high-frequency sight words, which are essential to beginning readers. Students will also use mini flashlights and reading highlighter tools to help keep reading fun and engaging. These materials will also be used during their literacy stations independently!
I know that by revamping up my guided reading time, I will see more student successes in reading and I will be able to create a life long love of reading and learning!
