Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is a Dual Language classroom in a Title I school district. This means my students all come from Spanish speaking homes and most of them come from poverty. My students are trying to learn all the objectives that the state requires them to learn at the same time that they are trying to learn a new language.
Due to Hurricane Harvey, we lost many classroom materials, and many of my students lost almost everything in their homes as well.
My whole school was displaced the whole first semester, and I was teaching in a library together with another pk class. Most of my colleagues were doubled up as well. Our students were crowded and trying to learn in a very difficult situation; despite all that, we recently tested our students' academic progress and the majority of them are right on track to master all the goals at the end of the year. Many of them are well above.
My Project
Most of my students are starting to read despite all the difficulties that we endured after Harvey. I want to encourage them to love reading and all the magical worlds they can explore through books. Unfortunately my supply of guided reading books is very limited and my students lack the resources at home to buy books.
I want to teach my students to enjoy reading at home as well as in school, but I need to provide them with appropriate books for them to take home and practice reading.
The materials I have requested will make this possible. I will send three books with each student per week, so that they can practice reading at home and become fluent readers at their tender age of four. Every student will have their book bag and I will exchange books every week so that they can have a variety of books to choose from.
