Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are hardworking children. My classroom is located in the heart of the Central Valley. Many of my students are English Learners as well as migrant, transient, or homeless.
Many of my students wake up at dawn and stay at school until 5:30 every evening, and, for many of my students, school is the only dependable and stable part of their lives.
These young students work hard every day to conquer the learning that is put in front of them. Their passion and commitment to learning should be an inspiration to us all!
My Project
Many of my students struggle with reading. Each day I meet with small groups based on reading level and teach a guided reading lesson. For these lessons we use sets of books, that are often hard to come by at our school due to limited resources. These titles are some of the students' favorites, in which I have not been able to find in the school's library. Often times, I am searching local libraries and/or purchasing sets of high interest books at the bookstore.
Guided reading is perhaps one of the most important lessons of the day for these struggling readers.
These books will enable us to have our own classroom guided reading library where we won't have to search through the school's resources to find excellent texts that will engage my students. These texts will go hand in hand with topics such as segregation, women's rights, Cesar Chavez and being a hero in your own community!
