Do you remember getting hooked on books as a child? Imagine students who are struggling and dread getting called on to read. That is what I want to change! My class consists of second grade students with special needs, specifically learning disabled. They have difficulty reading and writing and the two are connected so deeply to each other. My hope is to increase their reading AND writing levels so they can enjoy these subjects at school. Research supports that getting students on-level by the end of third grade can shape their entire educational future. This is a critical stage in their development.
My students need to get their hands on authentic books that are at their individual reading levels.
I want to build a library of leveled books for my students to learn to read and respond to in writing. Their peers are excited to read and write and I want all of my students to have the same passion about books and learn to love reading and writing. Please consider donating to this library so every child gets what he or she needs to be successful.
My Project
During our guided reading groups, I currently use black and white paper versions of books to teach my students to read. Needless to say, they are not the most engaging books.
My students need colorful, authentic books to engage and motivate them to read.
Every child deserves to learn to read with a real-life book in their hands! I have started a leveled library where these books are available for students to visit and bring books home to enjoy but my hope is to expand the library to include at least 2 more editions of each book so I can use them for guided reading lessons in my class. Please help my students and I obtain motivating, colorful and authentic books to use daily in our classroom.
