My students need guided reading novels to complete together in their leveled reading groups. Items include books by Roald Dahl, Kate DiCamillo, and many others.
"This is not a book about teaching a child how to read; it's about teaching a child to want to read. There's an education adage that goes, what we teach children to love and desire will always outweigh what we make them learn." ~Jim Trelease
I teach twenty-six 5th grade students in central Virginia.
My class has an enthusiastic and exciting bunch of kiddos. Last year I had an equal number of boys in girls in my classroom. My school is a Title I elementary school in central Virginia with around 600 students. My school believes that learning is a cooperative effort between the teachers, students, and parents. In my classroom I work to create citizens today for tomorrow's world by utilizing technology and focusing on the learning fundamentals. I have a variety of reading levels in our class which is one reason why I am looking forward to having a new books covering these levels.
My Project
My main focus in fifth grade is for my students to develop an independent reading life outside of the classroom. Students are expected to ready everyday for extended period of time both at home and school to build reading stamina. In the same way a long-distance athlete needs to develop stamina for running, my fifth graders need to build reading stamina, especially when they complete the End-of-Grade (SOL) tests. Apart from testing, being able to read for long periods of time will be a strength in middle school and eventually the workplace. Through the chapter books, I will acts as a facilitator in small guided reading groups where students critically analyze what they read while using proven reading strategies such as summarizing, predicting, clarifying, predicting, connecting, and more. Guided reading also encourages students to make real-world connections to their lives.
By providing these books for my students will not only provide teaching tools in my classroom, they will provide entertaining books for independent reading growth.
It is my goal for my students to be proud of their reading ability and I hope to provide them with as many tools as possible for them to reach their highest potential. Before my students leave my room for middle school I want to make sure they are literacy rich and have a hunger for reading.
