Our school is located on the northwest side of Milwaukee and serves all students from preschool through fifth grade. I have been a kindergarten teacher for five years. I love working with a classroom of sweet, curious, eager, little humans.
100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.
The parents at my school are amazing and do everything they can for their children. However, many of my students still start their educational career academically behind the average student. We are an extremely large school district and funding is very sparse. Most of our resources come from my own pocket or from generous donors thanks to Donorschoose.org.
Kindergarten is the foundation to my students’ educational life. Please help me provide a safe, nurturing and engaging environment for my young scholars!
Guided Reading is part of the literacy block and is part of the structured rotation schedule. During Guided Reading students come to the "teacher table", a kidney shaped table for small group work where the teacher can see what all students are doing, for 10-15 minutes and receive strategic and intensive reading instruction based on their reading level. While this is a short amount to time to spend with the teacher, it is where amazing student gains happen.
As a teacher, Guided Reading at the teacher table is my favorite and most rewarding part of the school day.
However, for students, it is where the most "work" takes place. This can sometimes be daunting to young learners. By having special gizmos, that are only at the teacher table, students want to come work with me because they get to use tools that are special to my table. Over the years, I have learned that the most effective way to run the "teacher table" is to make it the most desired center to be at. Little things like Emoji Erasers, Toobaloos, Alphabots, and Dry Erase Table Spots, make coming to the teacher table the highlight of my students’ school day. They don't even realize it’s the hardest because they are super engaged with their special teacher tools. The teacher table, itself, will make it easy for me to work with all of my students. The gizmos will make my teacher table the highlight of my students’ school day! Thanks to your generous donations, some (maybe even all) of my students will like guided reading more than RECESS!
