Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I'm a 5th-grade teacher at a local charter elementary school. I have 20 students enrolled in my classroom, all of which contribute their unique backgrounds, cultures, skills, and talents to our class. What makes our school and classroom so unique is the fact that the parents are extremely involved in their children's education. They are very appreciative of what I do and what their students have accomplished this year. My students come from a variety of different homes, varying in socioeconomic levels.
Our school provides free breakfast to every student every single day of our school week.
75% of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunches. Due to our limited classroom funds, my access to resources and classroom materials is extremely limited. I have a large range of learners in my classroom from English Language Learners, learning disabilities, giftedness and students with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.
My Project
I would like to provide my students with a wide range of opportunities to read and dive deep into some classic novels. Novels such as Love that Dog, Wonder, Out of My Mind, and Rules will help my students be immersed into a world of diversity, while also learning the fundamentals of reading, such as fluency and vocabulary.
Classic novels for kids not only keeps them engaged, but they're learning so much more about life than they realize.
During my guided reading table, we typically read about a chapter a day, then dive into comprehension questions about authors' purpose, visualization, and figurative language just to name a few things.
