I work in Queens for the New York City Department of Education in what is accurately described as one of the most ethnically diverse communities on Earth. Over the course of my tenure, my school has claimed students from nearly 100 countries, speaking approximately 40 languages. The learning community services a multi-ethnic, multilingual population predominantly hailing from Asia. Largely composed of families from China, the student community comes to school bringing culture-rich experiences from across the globe. This cultural richness is celebrated across school curricula and it is the cornerstone of the school’s identity as an institution of learning.
Daily, I am inspired by the cultural richness, the spirit of diversity, and academic rigor inculcated amongst our students.
My Project
Guided reading is an essential in the development of early readers. As an educator, it's important to stay in tune and up-to-date with new and innovative pedagogies. Therefore, I'm requesting the Guided Reading, Second Edition: Responsive Teaching Across the Grades, that all staff at my school will have access to. This teacher resource will assist all staff and myself with the newest ideas and philosophies in guided reading. In addition, I'm requesting an early literacy writing center. Beginner ELL's can work on this center with my support or independently, as I'm working with other students in guided reading. Lastly, I'm requesting colored anchor chart paper. This paper will be used to post the expectations for guided reading and centers, as well as the important key ideas we discuss throughout those sessions. These materials will assist me in boosting my students' literacy skills.
