Every morning, we start with our literacy choice time. The children search the classroom library for books that grab their interest, and then dive in! That is my time to pull students to work with me in order to develop a true passion for reading.
I have an amazing group of kindergarten and first grade students who are just beginning to develop a love of reading.
They are a wonderful mix of children from very diverse backgrounds who have considerably different levels of reading experience. Some bring favorite books from home to share with the class, while others are amazed at the idea of owning a book of their very own.
My Project
Our goal is to raise funds for a set of six iPads to use for our guided reading center. With the help of bakes sales and garage sales, we have been able to purchase two refurbished iPads so far. I am hopeful that, with these iPads, the children will each have access to a copy of the same book for us to explore as a group, as I guide them to a deeper appreciation and understanding of the story. The iPads will allow us to have access to multiple copies of hundreds of different stories without the cost or storage issues connected with traditional books. The Reading Strategies book, and the Common Core Companion will assist me in creating lessons that have the strongest possible impact on these kids and their reading skills.
Donations to this project will help me do my part to create a generation of life-long readers.
The iPads and lessons will be instrumental in giving these children access to so many stories that they otherwise might not have been able to explore. But, not only THIS group of children! These materials will be used again and again, year after year, to help build a love of reading, and strong literacy skills. Literacy skills that may one day open up the world for all those kids.
