Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach English Language Development (ELD) to kindergartners through third graders at Edison Brentwood Academy in East Palo Alto. Last year we adopted a guided reading program and myself and the other ELD teacher were asked to do guided reading twice a week with our students. I teach approximately 250, mostly Hispanic, students (half our student population) each day. Guided reading allows children to read at their own level with children of the same ability. The children should experience books from different genres so they can be taught the different structures, and word and sentence level related work. Working in guided groups allows the children to receive direct instruction at their own reading level and promotes valuable discussions about the texts to reinforce comprehension. It was a great experience because I spent quality time observing and monitoring my students' reading growth and it was exciting to see how much progress they made throughout the year!
The challenge this coming year, as it was last year, is providing my students with enough leveled books to read throughout the school year. I have approximately 30 students per class for eight classes daily. While our school does maintain a literacy room with some leveled books there are not enough to go round for all classrooms, and as such it has been difficult finding enough books in sets of 5 to meet the needs of all my students. With my school's limited budget there hasn't been any money allocated above my ELD curriculum.
My hope is that some generous soul(s) can help my students by providing funding for books for levels G, H, & I. Each level contains 60 trade books (6 copies of 10 titles), a teacher's guide, and 10 teaching cards. This would provide all our students (expected 2005/06 enrollment to be 500 students) with enough books to read through out the school year. In addition, many of these titles (Math at the Store, School in Colonial America, and A Flag for All) tie into our regular ELD curriculum and therefore, we can expand our lessons and provide extension activities for our students.
I am hoping to get as many as these books as soon as I can to begin the new school year off with a bang!
Thank you in advance for your generous support of my students' education.
