Over 80% of our students come from disadvantaged backgrounds. Many of these children don't have access to the selection of reading and math materials that children from more affluent families take for granted. Our children have a great hunger for knowledge but often lack the materials to fulfill this appetite. Our school is a neighborhood school in a small New England city. There is a strong sense of community here between parents, staff, and residents that truly makes a difference in the school experience.
My Project
First grade is a big year for learning to read. My students come in to my classroom in the fall with all different reading levels.
Guided reading is a huge part of of our day in first grade.
I work with small groups of students (about 4-5 in a group) and read books at their level. It is helpful to have sets of books of the same title so we can all read together in these small groups.
The books that I have posted in this project are at different reading levels of first grade readers. These books will help me teach my students how to read independently and give us the option of all reading the same story together!
