Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Can you imagine coming to fourth grade with a first or second grade reading level? Well, many of my students face this challenge each year. Often, nonfiction is the key to opening the reading world to my most struggling readers.
My classroom is composed of mostly Hispanic students with English as a second language.
Our school receives 100% free breakfast and lunch due to our low socioeconomic status. While they are up against a lot, my students come to school everyday with a hope for knowledge.
My Project
We need leveled fiction and non-fiction books to encourage their interests and expand their knowledge. With these books, I will be able to hold guided reading groups with my most struggling readers. I will be able to hopefully move those students from non-readers and students who do not enjoy reading, into students that can't put a book down.
Cesar Chavez once said, "You cannot uneducate the person who has learned to read." This quote speaks to me as an educator because my students need a leg up.
As they come from an area where most are forgotten, they need to feel the pride and joy of learning that will raise them to the next level of their lives. They can and will achieve.
