My Students
I work in a culturally diverse city in Maine. I work in a low-income/high poverty rate school. We also have a high ELL population. From the first day of school, I work to establish relationships with my students that are built on trust and mutual respect. In my room, we work hard to build an inclusive classroom community where everyone feels welcomed and valued. My favorite times with my students usually happen during read aloud. Their enthusiasm and love for reading are contagious. My students are creative, diverse and energetic! I am blessed to be able to teach, guide, laugh and learn with them.
My Project
I am using the guided math model to teach math to my students. I find it easier to teach this way because I can really refine my instruction to fit the needs of my students in a small-group setting. During guided math students spend some instruction time with me and then participate in different activities to support the skill they are working on. The easel would really help me to model skills for my students. The other materials will be great manipulatives to help my students learn how to regroup. Regrouping is a new concept that students learn and it can be challenging for students to understand why they need to regroup. These manipulatives will give them a visual and help them to understand regrouping.
