My students are the best! They walk into our classroom excited to learn every day. We are a small diverse public school in the city of Chicago. We have over 500 students in our Pre-K to 8th-grade school. I teach at a school where most of my Third and Fourth graders are learning English as a second language. Many of them just moved from China recently. They are so eager to learn and be successful, but most students do not come to school with the necessary tools to help motivate that eagerness. That's where Guided Math comes in place.
My Project
Guided math is a new initiative I am taking on. We do guided math so that we can reach all the learners in the classroom. We do guided math because we can differentiate instruction in many ways. We do guided math so we can engage our students and ourselves. It requires that we push our own thinking, to ensure that we throw a wide enough net to catch all the learners. So, guided math makes us think about how our kids learn. It puts the focus on them.
Getting organized for Guided Math is a critical first step.
To organize my weekly centers, I will use the large clip boxes so I can store them out of the way but easily put out at a center. I will use the cart to store all of the math centers that I'm not using right now or all the math centers I've prepped and need to house until they are ready for use. Each drawer will be labeled with the topic or skill. Inside each drawer, I will keep my math centers for that skill.
A well-organized classroom means a well-organized math block! It is extremely important to have all of my math materials and manipulatives organized and labeled so that the students know exactly where to find what they need and where to put it back.
Everything in my classroom will have a “home” and my kiddos will know that all of our materials always go “home” when they are done with them. Please help us get organized and stay organized!
